The conference is held at the Grand Summit Lodge in Canyons Village of Park City Mountain Resort, with additional lodging available at the nearby Sundial and Silverado Lodges. Park City Mountain Resort is the largest ski and snowboard resort in North America, with over 7,300 acres of accessible terrain. In addition to abundant skiing, Canyons Village has a number of restaurants, full spa services, shopping, and easy access to Park City’s historic Main Street.
An extended break is planned on mid-day Thursday to allow for participants to take advantage of the winter activities in Park City. While skiing is an obvious opportunity, there are a number of additional things to do for the non-skiers among us.
Some of the activities below require us to make reservations in advance for a defined group. To facilitate planning, conference participants are requested to respond to the brief survey provided in the conference correspondence.
Park City Mountain Resort has offered discounted lift tickets to conference participants. One-Day Lift Tickets are $115 per Adult and $74 per Child (children under 4 years of age ski free), and multi-day packages are available. Vouchers for the discounted rate will be distributed to conference attendees upon arriving at the Canyons. Ski school lessons are also available at a discounted rate for conference attendees. A trail map of the entire resort’s skiable terrain is available here. The snow and weather report can be found here.
We are not formally organizing skiing on Thursday, given the large group and wide range of ability. On Friday after the conference, Prof. Shobe, who is particularly familiar with the ski area, is planning on leading a group of experienced skiers down a number of black and difficult blue runs.
Skis and equipment can be rented at the conference hotel at a 25% discount. Discounted rentals available for our group can be reserved here, and we encourage you to reserve your equipment ahead of time in order to minimize wait time on the days you’d like to ski.
A guided snowshoe tour is available for those interested in enjoying the outdoors on Thursday but who may not be interested in skiing. The route is designated “easy to moderate” and is projected to take a couple of hours.
Conference participants are of course welcome to explore the other options available at the resort and in the area. For instance, the Grand Summit has offered a 15% discount on its spa packages to conference attendees. Tours are also available at the nearby Olympic Park, which includes an Olympic bobsled run.
Canyons Village is approximately 35 minutes east of Salt Lake City International Airport. Uber and Lyft coverage in Salt Lake City is robust, and is likely the most convenient mode of transportation to Park City. All major car rental companies serve the Salt Lake Airport. Traditional cabs and shuttles are also available.
Navigation apps, such as Google Maps, will easily direct you to the resort. (The address to enter for Google Maps: Grand Summit Hotel, 4000 Canyons Resort Dr, Park City, UT 84098)
Basic directions from the airport to the resort are as follows:
Salt Lake City Airport Car Rental Information
Canyon Transport (chartered shuttle service that regularly serves Park City’s ski resorts)
Ute Cab (traditional taxi service)
At the conference hotel:
Valet and self-parking is available at the Grand Summit. If you are planning on parking a vehicle, please contact the conference organizers to get the details on the full range of options.
At the Lund Cabin (Thursday evening):
Although a shuttle will be provided, there is also limited parking for several vehicles at the Lund Cabin at Deer Valley, which is where dinner will be held Thursday evening. If you are planning on driving, please coordinate with the conference organizers to ensure there will be sufficient parking space for your vehicle.
